Testosterone Not a Viagra Booster

Combining testosterone therapy with Viagra doesn't make the little blue pill more effective in treating erectile dysfunction, according to a study done at Boston University and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

However, lead author Matthew Spitzer, MD and colleagues found that optimized doses of sildenafil, the generic name for Viagra, boosted erectile function scores by 7.7 points from a baseline of less than 25 for men with erectile dysfunction and low testosterone levels.

"Administration of sildenafil alone was associated with a substantial increase in EFD score," the authors wrote. "The findings were similar for other domains of sexual function in younger men, more obese men, and men with lower baseline testosterone levels or an inadequate response to sildenafil alone."

According to an article in Healthday on the study, the team pointed out that combination treatment has become increasingly common but the trial results suggest that this practice should not be routine. On the other hand, Healthday notes that the group says the findings shouldn't "be extrapolated to imply that testosterone has no beneficial effect in men with ED who have low testosterone levels. Testosterone is an approved drug for the treatment of hypogonadism in men and may have other beneficial effects on body composition, muscle strength, physical performance, cognition, and metabolism, which were not investigated in this trial."
