Will Testosterone Fuel Biotech’s Next Great Race?

Posted by Dr. Michael White, Updated on November 25th, 2018

Reading Time: 3 minutes Boys will be boys. We fight, we apologize, and we enjoy some cold ones the next day like nothing happened. That fraternal feeling may never reach some feuding biotech companies, which seem to find the courtroom as familiar as the research lab. At the center of it all is the hormone that defines masculinity itself: testosterone. Feel the irony? By now you've probably seen a commercial on TV or a full page print ad for AbbVie's (NYSE: ABBV) AndroGel -- the leading testosterone replacement therapy, or TRT, on the market. And you shouldn't expect the marketing barrage to end any … Read more »

Reading Time: 2 minutes The hormone makes people more egocentric and dramatically reduces cooperation between people, according to a new study of females. YuriyZhuravov/Shutterstock A study testing the effect of testosterone has found that it dramatically lowers cooperation between individuals, making people more egocentric. In this study, people performed their task more poorly under the influence of testosterone. It didn't affect their individual performance, but the lack of cooperation it caused resulted in partners making the wrong choice more frequently than they did when not under the influence of testosterone. Oh, and by the way, all the subjects were women. Self-centered, unwilling to listen, … Read more »

The Modern Female Eunuch

Posted by Dr. Michael White, Updated on November 25th, 2018

Reading Time: 2 minutes Historically, low levels of testosterone seemed to make eunuchs ideal negotiators. Their highly specialized and respected roles are now being filled by women. Qing Dynasty Imperial Dowager Empress of China with palace eunuchs [Wikimedia Commons] Germaine Greer's 1970 feminist screed The Female Eunuch gave eunuchs a bad name. Applying the term for castrated males to women's political and social disempowerment, Greer overlooked the fact that actual eunuchs -- and other men with low testosterone -- have occupied some of the most powerful positions in government and the military throughout history. Only a few countries, and a handful of U.S. states, … Read more »

Posted by Dr. Michael White, Updated on November 25th, 2018

Reading Time: 2 minutes Testosterone deficiency is exceedingly less common than marketing campaigns and "you only think you feel fine" culture would have us believe. By now you've likely seen the commercials. Fit-looking middle-age men telling you how they put on weight, had less energy, and were no longer the sexual tigers they were in their twenties -- until, that is, they started rubbing testosterone gel on their shoulder, upper arm, or abdomen. Now they feel more like the men they used to be. The commercials don't mention a 2009 study in the New England Journal of Medicinewherein a group of men ontestosterone replacement … Read more »

Reading Time: < 1 minute Donna asks, What are the signs of low testosterone in men and what are the treatments? Did you notice that Donna asked the question, instead of her significant other? That's because this is an area that men don't want to talk about, but it affects spouses equally. I know, you are probably just thinking that this is about sex, but in reality it is really so much more. Testosterone is the primary hormone that makes a boy turn into a man. It is not the hormone that differentiates boys from girls, that estrogen (women have small amounts of testosterone too!) … Read more »

Posted by Dr. Michael White, Updated on April 12th, 2018

Reading Time: < 1 minute A sharp uptake in testosterone products by Australian men has been blamed on 'disease mongering' by pharmaceutical companies.
